Pug Information

In this part of the site, we will give you all the information from how to take care of your pug, to the history of pugs, to what colors they come in. This information is essential to any pug-fan.

What is a pug?

A pug is a breed of dog originating from mid Asia. These dogs are perhaps some of the most intelligent organisms in the world based on recent scientific studies. This dog may be a dog scientifically, but spiritually, he is like a little person. They are very caring, loving, and adaptive to their surroundings. Many pugs, get along beautifully with cats, other dogs, even birds and pet rodents. These dogs come in a medium sized body, and usually weigh anywhere from 15-45 pounds. Many pugs weigh more but not just because of fat, but actually mostly muscle. Pugs are very active, and have many strong, large muscles. This gives the owner the idea that he or she is getting fat, when sometimes, it is just them getting stronger, and not fatter.

Pugs are very good family dogs, and interact very well with people anywhere from 6 months, to 100 years. In fact, many pugs will protect a baby or a small child as if it was their puppy. This is a common action of the normal pug. He will pick out one person to protect until the death, and will stay by this person until the end. This person is usually the youngest person in the family.

How Should I Take Care of My Pug?

It is very hard to find truthful information on how to take care of any animal, especial one that is so needy like the pug. The information in this website is 100% true because it is information found in the Merck Manual of Veterinary Science, among other trusted books, and trusted veterinarians themselves. But please remember, every pug may need some minor changes from the normal plan, so nothing is better then talking to your pet's vet.

Target Weight: 15-45 POUNDS

GROOMING- NOT AT ALL DEMANDING

FOOD: THE BEST FOOD TO FEED A PUG IS NUTRO, SCIENCE DIET, OR IAMS. SIZE OF MEAL SHOULD BE DETERMINED BY A TRUSTED VET.

LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: PUGS SHOULD LIVE INDOORS BECAUSE THEY CAN EASILY DEVELOP MAJOR EYE PROBLEMS INCLUDING BLINDNESS IF THEY LIVED OUTSIDE FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. THIS IS DUE TO THEIR BIG, BULKY EYES.

COMMON HEALTH PROBLEMS: OBESITY, EYE ABNORMALITIES, BREATHING PROBLEMS, BIRTH COMPLICATIONS

BREEDING: PUGS SHOULD BE CHECKED OUT BY A TRUSTED VET BEFORE BREEDING. BREEDING A PUG WITH A SHORT NECK CAN BE DANGEROUS FOR THE PUPS, AND FOR THE MOTHER.

Pug's Shape, Sizes, Coat, and Color

Pugs come in various verities. Some a big, some are small, some a short and some are tall, while others are black and others fawn. Pugs come in various "shapes". Some are square-like, while others are shaped like a horizontal oval. These shapes can determine the outcome of certain health problems, but no matter what shape, size, coat, or color, pugs are always going to be loving, caring, and a wonderful pet.

Pugs also come in different sizes. Some are larger then others. A traditional Chinese pug will usually be larger both horizontally and vertically then  a more common  English pug. The size can effect certain health problems, but this is common in every organism in the world.

Pugs also come with different coats. This is usually determined by their color. Fawn, or white pugs have more rough, fur, while black and silver pugs have very silky fur. The ears are the main difference though. The pug with the softest ears is a black pug, and you should be careful what the feel of their ear is, because they like nothing better then for you to rub it!

Their History

Pugs have a long history. They first evolved from the famous mastiff dog, in Asia. Then later on, these dogs were considered to be gods to some early people. They would worship them. Evidence can be found on the walls where some of the first cavemen lived. These pugs then went to England where the became very famous. Many Queens of England had a pug. From the mid 1600's to the early 2000's, pugs are still famous in England. Pugs then came to America, where black and apricot pugs were first born. This species became the top of the line in the toy group of dogs. These dogs are still popular, although they are not as popular as they once were. However, they are on the comeback. People all over the world either want or have a pug at their side.
